Telecom operators are gradually deactivating their 2G networks in Europe, prompting businesses to migrate to next-generation solutions for their connected devices. For our customers who have already taken this step, the transition has been straightforward and has enabled them to optimise the remote monitoring of their tanks.

Data transmission, a key element in logistics and safety

Telemetry units on oil, gas and chemical tanks measure and transmit key data such as fill levels and temperature. Reliable transmission is crucial, as this remote monitoring data helps to optimise logistics and improve the safety of these flammable and explosive products.

2G, long used for the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), is gradually being abandoned in Europe in favour of 4G and 5G. As a result, 2G devices have become obsolete, requiring a technological upgrade.

The strategic choice of technologies dedicated to the IIoT

At Sensile Technologies, we have equipped our telemetry units with SIM cards that operate on communication networks dedicated to the IIoT (LTE CAT-M1 and NB-IoT). These technologies are particularly well suited to our solutions and to the way in which they are used – often in remote locations with no electrical connection.

A few benefits at a glance:

  • Low energy consumption – Batteries last even longer, up to 7-8 years
  • Extended coverage – The penetration of networks dedicated to the IIoT is better than standard 2G, 3G, 4G or 5G networks, making monitoring more reliable for the most remote tanks in cellars or underground.
  • Longevity – These technologies are defined as “future proof”, designed for long-term use.

Many customers have already made the transition successfully

For several years now, we have been supporting our European customers in this transition linked to the end of 2G. Upstream, we advise them on investment choices and deployment strategy. Then, thanks to our TrackUP module, which plans and coordinates the work of technicians in the field, equipment replacements are managed smoothly and efficiently. The new telemetry units are put into operation immediately, without any service interruption or loss of data.

“The replacement was perfectly managed, thanks to the advice we received and the effective coordination of operations in the field. The data was fully preserved, and our new telemetry units, which now operate on CAT-M1, are even more reliable than their predecessors.” says Romain Nicoulaz, External Sales Representative, VARO Energy in Switzerland.
