Several times a year, we take you behind the scenes at Sensile Technologies to meet one of our team members. Today, we invite you to meet Federico Conzelmann, Electronic Engineer.

Microtechnology – a passion born of serendipity

Federico Conzelmann holds a Master’s degree in microtechnology from EPFL. Initially, an internship in aeronautics sparked his interest in mechanical engineering. However, as there was no room in this section, he opted for microtechnology. He quickly developed a passion for the challenge of “putting electronics into motion”, and has no regrets that chance led him down this path.

Ultimately, it was the ideal direction for this self-described “jack-of-all-trades, master of none”. Microengineering, which is multidisciplinary by nature, perfectly matches his curiosity and his ability to bring together knowledge from different backgrounds.

At Sensile Technologies, Federico’s main role is to research electronic components, create prototypes and carry out tests. Whether it’s an internal technological choice or changes in supply, there’s always something to do. When it comes to testing, Federico calls himself a “slacker” because he doesn’t like repetitive work, but he’s quite the opposite. In fact, he has used his IT skills to create a programme that automates testing.

Automated tests for greater efficiency

For these tests, the telemetry units are placed in a climatic chamber, a device that could be described as both an oven and a refrigerator. We then check that the electronics behave as expected under different temperature conditions (including extreme ones) and for all the commands. Federico’s programme synchronises all the operations: he simply presses the START button, considerably optimising the process and freeing up his time for other tasks.

Federico is currently involved in several important projects for future developments. He considers himself lucky to be able to apply everything he has learnt and to benefit from great flexibility in the way he works. He appreciates the balance of continuity guidelines and the freedom that the engineers enjoy in terms of how to do things.

Surpassing yourself and new horizons

After joining Sensile Technologies about two and a half years ago, he was quickly confronted with the cerebral gymnastics required to design telemetry units subject to high explosive risks. Fortunately, he likes a good challenge.

Outside work, he finds his balance in sport, particularly martial arts. For the last ten years, after having tried judo, full contact karate and Brazilian jujitsu, he has been enjoying muay-thaï (Thai boxing). He sees the sport as a way of pushing himself and letting off steam, getting rid of frustrations and relaxing. He also practises the sport with his wife and that gives him the opportunity to travel: every year they go to Thailand together to train in the birthplace of the discipline.
