Several times a year, we take you behind the scenes at Sensile Technologies to meet one of our team members. Today, we invite you to meet Jonathan Vion, Product Compliance Engineer.
From large machines to compact technologies
After studying electrical engineering in Reims and Nancy, in eastern France, Jonathan Vion spent more than 14 years working in the energy sector, particularly in instrumentation associated with high-power rotating machinery. He specialized in the technical design of on-board equipment, then in certifying these machines for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX).
In 2022, after a stint in industrial energy network engineering, he joined Sensile Technologies, swapping megawatts and thick cables for our ultra-compact telemetry solutions. Although the environment is different, the principle remains the same: ensuring technical compliance and safety.
The multiple aspects of compliance
Jonathan’s role is to ensure that the telemetry units we bring to market for players in the oil, gas, and chemical industries, among others, comply with the various standards and regulations. One important point concerns radio telecommunications: each region of the world imposes its own rules, and we must ensure that our equipment communicates without interfering with other devices.
Compliance also includes ATEX certification, which proves that a telemetry unit can be safely installed in an explosive area. Jonathan works closely with the R&D teams to ensure that the necessary protections are incorporated at the design stage. He then compiles the certification file and liaises with the relevant authorities until approval is granted. He also ensures that technical data is sent correctly to the production units so that specifications are met.
His work involves monitoring regulatory developments and understanding their potential impact on our IIoT equipment. In particular, he expects to see cybersecurity requirements tighten across the board. In the European Union, for example, the future Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) will complement the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) already in force for connected objects (read our article of 16 June 2025).
Instinctive understanding and effective execution
Based in Switzerland since joining Sensile Technologies, Jonathan maintains strong ties with France, particularly to attend the matches of his favorite team: Olympique de Marseille. He often shares these occasions with his son, while his younger daughter is starting to gain a feel for the stadium atmosphere.
To pay tribute to his love of football, let’s suggest a parallel with his profession: precision, vision and teamwork are key on the pitch, and the same is true in the field of compliance, where rigor, discernment and collaboration are essential. For Jonathan, in his daily work as an engineer, this means having a thorough knowledge of all the standards and applying them without being inflexible in his exchanges with the various stakeholders. His approach is to anticipate, adjust, and move forward pragmatically – while always keeping the end goal in sight.
